50th Anniversary

SPUMC celebrated its 50th year on the anniversary of its charter, which
was September 12, 1954. On September 12, 2004, one Sunday service of
worship was held, at 10 a.m., commemorating our 50 years of ministry in
the Sandhills community.
The Rev. Paul Bunn, who served this congregation from 1990- 1994, was
the guest preacher. Rev. Bunn retired from full-time pastoral ministry
in 1995. Invitations had been sent to all previous pastors to join us on
this day and be recognized. Spouses of deceased pastors, who served
SPUMC, had also been invited.
Special honor was given to Sarah Hiatt, still living and an active part
of this congregation, and one of the eleven people who first gathered in
worship on June 13, 1954 to form this congregation. A catered luncheon
following the service was well attended.
Also on this day, the strategic plan, "Looking to the Future," was
consecrated. This document, formed over the previous year, through a
process of biblical reflection and spiritual discernment, will guide the
ministry and mission of SPUMC for the next 3 - 5 years.
This service "bridged" the labors of the saints of our past with God's
vision for our future. What a glorious day!
